A Djembe Drum is also known as djimbe, jenbe, yembe and jembe. Its skin is covered with hand drum and of a shape like a large goblet. Different strokes of the hands are used for playing it. The Djembe Drum is a well-known member to all among all the World Drums.
Djembe Drums are of the diameter measuring 30 cm and height of 60 cm. There are also small sizes of it measuring 13 cm to 46 cm in diameter. A wide variety of tones can be produced by it as of its goblet shape, the internal carvings and the skin. Its proper sound can be achieved with a very small effort for maximum effect. The key to have a perfect sound from Djembe Drum is to focus or disperse the hand energy and positioning the hand in proper place.
Djembe Drums are the most common instruments found all over West Africa and is a love drum. Its origin is associated with the class of SuSu blacksmiths referred as Numu. The Numu migrated through out West Africa from the first millennium A.D. is the result of such wide dispersion of Djembe Drums.
The drums, which the remo makers built, are known as Remo djembo. It is similar to traditional West African drum from Maninka in West Africa. Its skin is of synthetic and is made up of fiberglass. It’s a popular drum among the people.
The difference between Remo djembo and Conga drums are that the later are quite narrow and tall whereas the former is of a shape of a large goblet.
